OK, so I’ve been looking around at all the cheap deals in the UK for a Samsung Galaxy S3 and here’s what I’ve come up with.

samsung galaxy s3
Vodafone
Free phone, £36 a month on a 24 month contract. 600 mins, 1GB, unlimited texts.
Total cost over 24m = £864

Orange
Free phone, £36 a month on a 24 month contract. 600 mins, 1GB, 3000 texts.
Total cost over 24m = £864

O2
£99 phone, £37 a month on a 24 month contract. 600 mins, 1GB, unlimited texts.
Total cost over 24m = £987

Three

Free phone, £34 a month on a 24 month contract. 2000 mins (+5000 to 3 phones), unlimited GB, 5000 texts.
Total cost over 24m = £816

OR

You could buy the phone for £499 from Amazon, then get a SIM only deal from Three for
Free phone, £12 a month on a 12 month contract. 600 mins, 1GB, 3000 texts.
Total cost over 24m = £787

OR

You could buy the phone for £499 from Amazon, then get a SIM only deal from Three for
Free phone, £10 a month on a 12 month contract. 300 mins, 1GB, 3000 texts.
Total cost over 24m = £739

OR

You could buy the phone for £499 from Amazon, then get a SIM only deal from Three for
Free phone, £15 a month on a 1 month rolling contract. 300 mins, unlimited GB, 3000 texts.
Total cost over 24m = £859

Conclusion

Now if you know you will keep the phone for 2 years, you might be happy to go with the lock in contracts and save money up front. It will cost you more in the end. Assuming you can shell out now, there’s a real advantage in the SIM only offers from Three. First, you will get an unlocked phone and not be locked into a long contract. The final option is only 1 month at a time. Also, the Three deals are much cheaper. The final deal also gives you unlimited data.

Some people worry about the Three network. I can assure you, it’s much better than it was 10 years ago when it got the bad reputation. Don’t just trust me though, trust the independent government affiliated reviews (YouGov). They consistently rate Three as the best network, though maybe not for customer service…. but how often do you really have to call them?

From Galaxy S3 Forums

Just discovered that if floppy disk drive is switched on in the BIOS but there isn’t a floppy drive, that Windows 7 setup becomes extremely slow and appears to hang on each dialogue box. Disabled floppy drive in the BIOS and now the windows 7 setup doesn’t keep pausing and is much faster.

There’s an easy way to detect fake flash / SD memory. Download H2testw as detailed below.

It keeps happening to me and I’m getting annoyed. I buy a lot of things on eBay and have very rarely had any problems, but more than half of the flash memory I’ve bought has been fake and I think I’d never buy flash from eBay again because of this. Basically the memory stick or card will appear normal. Sometimes the case will look very convincing (like Kingston or Sandisk etc.) You can copy a couple of files onto the memory fine….. BUT it is not the size it pretends to be. Recently bought a 16GB micoSD card that turned out to be a cheap 2GB card. If your files are randomly getting corrupted, here’s how to check:

1. Download H2testw here.
2. Format the memory stick / card so that it has maximum free space and the whole memory can be scanned.
3. Run H2testw which will tell you how much memory really exists.

The following is an example of a 16GB card that only has 1.9GB and is fake:

  • The media is likely to be defective.
  • 1.9 GByte OK (4028416 sectors)
  • 13.6 GByte DATA LOST (28696576 sectors)Details:0 KByte overwritten (0 sectors)
  • 0 KByte slightly changed (< 8 bit/sector, 0 sectors)
  • 13.6 GByte corrupted (28696576 sectors)
  • 0 KByte aliased memory (0 sectors)
  • First error at offset: 0x000000007a0fe000
  • Expected: 0x000000007a0fe000
  • Found: 0×0000000000000000
  • H2testw version 1.3
  • Writing speed: 4.41 MByte/s
  • Reading speed: 7.56 MByte/s
  • H2testw v1.4

You can see above that only 13.6GB has DATA LOST. Basically they’ve used a cheap, rejected chip and modified the controller to make it look bigger and sell it for more. Rip off. You may also find the following links helpful:

The most recent drivers for the Edimax EW-7612PIn wireless network card can actually be found on the RealTek website. The Edimax website is not very reliable and the links seem to be broken or to the wrong files. The card uses the RealTek chipset so might as well get the driver direct from RealTek as it will normally be more up to date than the one from Edimax.

Go to http://www.realtek.com and search for:

RTL8192SE

Scroll down to the software link and then it will give you a list of different drivers. Avoid the one at the top as this is for SU. You want the SE one.
